A Fuel-Efficient Automobile – Has It Been Truly So Difficult To Build?

Fuel economy was thought to be a significant factor in their selection of a new car by a minimum of 1/3 of buyers in America. Given the preoccupation today with pollution, global warming and America\’s dependence on international sources of oil, it\’s actually shocking to learn that as long ago as 1992 a car that got 100 miles to the gallon was built by General Motors. An additional vehicle, the GM TPC, which looked a lot like the Geo Metro, weighed only 1000 pounds and could get 75 miles per gallon. Unfortunately, to be able to meet American safety regulations, the 3-cylinder vehicle required reinforcement weighing 200 pounds, which ended in further development being discarded.

This was not the only prototype developed by GM which ended up on the scrapheap. A few of these were the 1982 GM Lean Machine which performed 80 miles per gallon, and the GM Ultralite which made 100 mpg. Honda introduced to the US market in 2007, a car known as the Fit, but known as the Jazz in other parts of the world. You will find economy-boosting options with the Jazz in Japan, such as a smaller engine and other ways to reduce consumption, but not so with the Fit in the US.

Auto manufacturers in America explain to their public that they create big autos because they, the public, love big autos. Building a small commuter type vehicle doesn\’t make the manufacturer big money, unlike with a large SUV. Commercials have convinced the citizens of the US that Tanks on Wheels are an absolute must to have. Fuel-saving options from the big companies are uncommon, so it\’s pretty easy to deduce where their interests lay. GM could today have been in the vanguard with fuel-efficient vehicles, but they decided, rather, to champion SUVs. All of the other car makers did the same thing by producing fuel-efficient cars, but then denied them to Americans.

American auto manufacturers have not given the US people the choice to acquire a fuel-efficient car, despite the world having beem embroiled in oil wars and being severely polluted. The question comes up: how many Americans would\’ve appreciated the option of getting a car with good gas mileage but weren\’t ever offered it? Can it be time to get access to those abandoned designs and, again, start building those vehicles that were once built a long time ago?

With solar energy, there is no water needed and no turbines needed. That has to do with creating electricity through the spinning of an electron magnet, that\’s what gets the electrons flowing. Solar panels are able to do this much more directly though.

The way that electricity is produced on solar panels is quite ingenious. What happens is they use a material called a semiconductor, and one of the features of this type of material is that when light hits it, electrons are caused to move. Now a little bit more work has to be done to make sure that they flow in a useful way, but that is the basic way that it works.

How To Use Solar Energy

When it comes to renewable energy systems then, it\’s very useful that electricity can be produced in this simple way. That\’s because it means that it is a lot more versatile.

It\’s important that to produce solar electricity does not require the use of turbines because they take up a lot of space, so it\’s not practical for many people to use it on an individual basis.

With solar energy though, it can be used on a much smaller scale. This means that you can get solar panels for your house, and they can take care of much of your energy needs. Renewable Resources

Although there are a number of different categories in which you can put energy sources, the main ones describe whether they are renewable or not. So you have the renewable resources, and then you have the non-renewable kind. Presently we are mostly using the non-renewable kind, but that is going to have to change soon.

Problems With Non-Renewable Resources

There are a number of problems with using non-renewable energy. One of the most obvious ones, coming from the very way that they are categorised, is that they are going to run out. If that were to happen without another source of energy to take over, then the economy would completely collapse.

Actually though, that would come about sooner than it takes for them to actually run out. That\’s because as they start to run out it become more difficult to extract them, meaning that they become more expensive. Once they become too expensive for people and companies to use, it has the same effect as if they had run out. We won\’t be able to afford to use them.

That\’s a problem that should still be some way in the future though. What most people focus on in the moment in terms of the problems that fossil fuels are causing is to do with global warming. By burning them we are releasing carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere, and while that cannot really be classed as a pollutant it is still dangerous.

It\’s not entirely accurate to say that carbon dioxide is a pollutant in the atmosphere because we do actually need it. It\’s what plants convert in to oxygen so that we can breathe the atmosphere. Even the greenhouse effect that it produces is necessary, because without greenhouse gases the world would be too cold to inhabit.

Of course it is because of the greenhouse effect that carbon dioxide is a dangerous gas to emit. That\’s because, while the world would be too cold to inhabit without it, with it the world could become too warm.

Nobody can really say exactly what the consequences are going to be of global warming, however there have been some pretty dire predictions made. One of those is that the sea levels are going to rise drastically due to the melting of the polar ice caps. Another one though, which is even more serious, is that ecosystems are going to collapse and that we won\’t be able to grow enough food anymore.

Clearly then these are some very big problems with fossil fuels, and some good reasons to go on to renewable resources instead. We already have them available, things like heat pumps and solar energy, so now the challenge is to use them a lot more.

Renewable Energy

Of all the forms of renewable resources that we have available, solar energy is probably the most popular and the most important. The reason for both is its versatility, it can be used for very small things like calculators, you can get solar panels for your home and they can be used for larger arrays as well.

With large solar arrays, solar power can be used in a more traditional way, acting as a solar power plant. If people get solar panels installed on their own property though then they will be able to get even more benefit financially as they\’ll be able to actually make money by producing energy in this way.

The problem, though, is that at the moment renewable energy is not very efficient. This means to get any significant financial benefit the government has to get involved. It does so by offering a feed in tariff, meaning that you get paid for any solar energy that you produce, even the stuff that you use yourself. This is something that quite a few governments around the world are involved in, including the UK government.

Ground Source Heating: Ground Source Heat Pumps

There are a number of ways that you can use renewable energy for your home. One option is to use solar energy to generate electricity with PV solar panels. You can also get solar thermal panels for your hot water system. Another very efficient way is to use heat pumps, one of the main kinds providing you with ground source heating.

How Ground Source Heat Pumps Work

Although the efficiency rating for ground source heating is usually given as 300-500%, this is not technically true. In practice it is, but really it\’s that it has a coefficient of performance of 3-5, but this means much the same thing. The difference is between the energy that we put in to the system, and the energy that comes in through nature.

What is being referred to here is that we only have to put in a small amount of electrical energy to get the pump working, and that we get out a lot more than that. The reason this is possible is because the extra energy is extracted from the ground.

The way this works is that pipes are installed underground, and through these pipes are refrigerant is run. The refrigerant is able to extract the heat from the ground, even through there isn\’t an awful lot there, and then transfer it to your house so you can feel the benefit.

The key point about a refrigerant, the property that means that it is able to transfer heat effectively, is that that it has a low boiling point. The consequence of this is that it doesn\’t take very much heat to turn a refrigerant from a liquid in to a gas, and gases have more energy than a liquid, meaning that they are hotter. So a lot of heat can be generated in this way.

Differences Between Installations of Heat Pumps

There\’s two ways that a ground source heat pump can be installed. Either horizontally or vertically. Which will be best for your situation is going to depend on a number of factors.

The horizontal installation is the cheaper option, but you do need quite a lot of space. Trenches are going to have to be dug, so you\’ll probably need a large garden for that. The pipes are laid in coils in order to maximise the surface area. You do only get a limited amount of heat though, as the earth gets hotter the deeper down you go.

If you do not have a lot of space, then you can go for a deep hole instead. This is the more expensive option, but you do actually get more heat from this sort of installation. That\’s because, the deeper down the pipes go, the more heat they are able to extract from the earth.

It\’s important, whichever sort of installation you go for, that the system is designed specifically for your property. There is an optimum size for each sort of property, and if it is larger or smaller than that then the heat pump will not work properly.

Other Renewable Heating Options

If you\’re looking at ways of providing renewable heating for your property, ground source heating is not the only option. You also have the air source heat pump to think about, for example. In fact installations of the air source kind are probably the cheapest and the easiest.

Although the temperature of the air does fluctuate more than the temperature underground, an air source heat pump will work in what we would consider cold weather as well. As it is all contained in a box which can be installed on the exterior of your property, it\’s an easier installation.

As mentioned, there is also the possibility of using solar thermal panels to use solar energy to provide you with hot water. This is also an efficient way of using renewable energy to heat your home.

Operating Your Car Unconventionally Using Renewable Energy Sources

With the hikes in gas prices, and the possibility of them remaining high, people are looking for alternative sources of fuel. The best clean cars would be those running on hydrogen, since their only emissions are heat and water vapors, quite environmentally friendly. Hybrids, including the Toyota Prius, apply two different energy sources, combining a small gas engine with an electric motor. Dealing with environmental problems and increasing fuel costs are two reasons to explore alternative energy sources.

Geothermal Power

There are many forms of renewable energy. The most popular and known about are probably solar energy, wind energy and hydro power. One that is not so well known, but which is also very useful, is geothermal power. This can be used in a couple of ways: as a normal sort of power plant, and as a heat pump to heat individual properties.

How Geothermal Power Plants Work

There aren\’t that many geothermal power plants, because they generally are not efficient enough to make building them worth the energy and expense. There are some places where they work particularly well though, so there are a few of them around.

They work on the same principles as conventional sorts of power plants. What happens is that water is heated, and this produces steam. The steam rises, and this makes turbines spin. The spinning turbines produce electricity.

The difference between the power plants that use geothermal energy and the conventional kind is how the water is heated. Normally the water is heated by burning a fossil fuel, or with nuclear energy in a nuclear power plant. As you would expect though, with geothermal energy, it is the energy that is extracted from the ground that is used to heat the water.

The way they get that heat to heat the water is by digging deep down in to the earth, and laying down pipes with a refrigerant in them in order to extract the heat from the Earth.

How do Ground Source Heat Pumps Work?

When it comes to the way that ground source heat pumps work, it\’s pretty much the same way that geothermal power plants work. Although the intention is not to heat water in order to create spin turbines of course, instead it is to provide heat for your home.

There are two ways to install the pipes that collect the heat from the ground. One way is the same as with the power plants, installing them vertically in a deep hole. This creates the most amount of heat, but also is more expensive.

Another way of installing the pipes is to dig trenches, so that they are installed horizontally. This does not generate quite as much heat, but the advantage is that it is cheaper. For this to be a viable option though you will need to have enough space in order to dig the trenches though.

Efficiency of Heat Pumps

When people talk about the efficiency of heat pumps, much of the time they mean the coefficient of performance. The way you can tell is that if they say that it has an efficiency over 100%, as that is not actually possible. In terms of the coefficient of performance though, ground source heat pumps have one between 3-5, meaning for every unit of energy inputted, you get 3-5 units out.

The reason it\’s necessary to input some electrical energy in is that this is what gets the pumps to actually work. The energy that is actually used to heat the water though comes from the ground, and you get 3-5 times more of that than the electricity needed to work the pumps.

If we were talking about a normal boiler, then the efficiency would be 300-500%. However it\’s impossible to actually get more energy out of a closed system than you put in, so 100% is the maximum. Practically speaking though that is never possible, the 90s is all you can expect in the real world.

Alternatives

If you want to use renewable heating for your home, then it doesn\’t have to be with ground source heat pumps. You can also get air source heat pumps, as well as solar thermal panels to use solar energy.
